The Miller Group

Implementation of a leading-edge backup and recovery system

IBM Storage Solution provides high levels of Automation, and reduced operational and administration costs.

The Challenge

The Miller Group had outgrown its backup and recovery mechanisms which were affecting systems availability. A new, leading-edge backup and recovery solution was required that would not only resolve existing issues but also future proof and provide capacity for ever growing levels of data growth and demands for future 24/7 application availability.

The Miller Group used a number of disparate solutions to backup the company’s data centre. Those disparate backup solutions were having difficulty backing up the company’s 10 Terabytes of data within the designated backup window. It was taking longer to backup and restore and the need to retrieve a backup from an external offsite store before starting a recovery added significantly to this restore time. These backup solutions were also difficult to maintain and used a number of different media types as well as requiring different levels of administration and support.

The Solution

Greater demands and reliance are placed on The Miller Group’s systems by the business which meant that the Group IT department needed to provide a world class solution. The Miller Group chose Elyzium and IBM products over Veritas & SUN and CommVault & Dell, because of its pedigree demonstrated in the delivery of its enterprise backup solutions.

The Miller Group also felt that Elyzium minimised the risk, not only by its pedigree but, by its commercial approach, and the quality of pre-sales and customer care.

Elyzium put forward a solution based on IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) operating on SUSE Linux running on IBM xSeries servers, IBM Total Storage DS4300 and DS4800 and IBM Total Storage 3584 Tape Library.

The project was undertaken in two distinct phases over a six month period. The first phase was the set-up by Elyzium for E-mail and file data. The second phase The Miller Group IT department undertook themselves to add the remainder of its data centre. This consisted of their ERP, Intranet and miscellaneous systems.

“The pre-project IBM technical training for The Miller Group IT staff allowed them to quickly get to grips with the Tivoli system. There was a smooth and timely transition to the new backup system." - Miller Group IT Manager

The Results

The backup method for all Group IT Systems is now standardised, backup times have been reduced and systems availability increased. Operational resources and administration requirements have been reduced, together with recovery times, resulting in lower operational costs.
